Cities for Mobility World Congress 2009 successfully concluded
Stuttgart and Florianópolis signed Bicycle Charter
For the third consecutive year, political representatives, traffic experts and representatives from the private sector and civil society gathered in Stuttgart for the World Congress of the global network Cities for Mobility, titled “Socially inclusive mobility - Access for all”. The event which took place from June 14 to 16, 2009 in Stuttgart City Hall served as a communication and information platform for around 350 representatives from more than 35 countries all over the world.
Several cooperation initiatives and contacts emerged from the event. Delegations from Brazil, Netherlands, China, Turkey, and Cameroon used the opportunity to celebrate side meetings in order to initiate cooperation activities and to establish ties with cities and organizations world wide. Furthermore, the City of Stuttgart signed cooperation agreements with the cities of Nanjing (China) and Almaty (Kazakhstan) during the congress.
The Mayor of Florianópolis, Dário Berger, and the Mayor of Stuttgart, Dr. Wolfgang Schuster, signed the "Bicycle Charter"
The World Congress finalized with the signature of the “Bicycle Charter” by the Mayors of Florianópolis and Stuttgart. In this document both cities commit themselves to promote bicycle friendly policies and to take concrete action to improve conditions for cyclists and pedestrians. In a next step, member cities will be invited to sign the Bicycle Charter.
